Classroom Use
Chimanda Adichie's TED Talk "tells the story of how she found her authentic cultural voice — and warns that if we hear only a single story about another person or country, we risk a critical misunderstanding." Historically, many Social Studies topics have only ever been taught from one point of view; that of the majority culture. In any classroom it is important to know what prior knowledge our students may have and what biases they may hold. What do our students know about Aboriginal people's contribution to Canadian development and in what context did they learn that information? Chimanda's talk is a great way to introduce this concern to your students and begin to facilitate conversation around why it is important to learn about topics from various points of view. |
